Volunteers Week FAQ's

Volunteers often work behind the scenes, quietly making a significant impact without seeking recognition. Volunteers' Week allows us to give them the spotlight they deserve, showcasing their selflessness and tireless work.

Volunteers Week serves as an inspiration for others to get involved and make a difference. Many people and organisations will highlight their stories and achievements of volunteers, which can motivate others who may be considering volunteering to take that step and join in the efforts to create positive change.

Volunteers Week 2023 takes place from June 1 to June 7. It's a weekly event that encourages communities and businesses to give volunteering a go

National Volunteers Week launched in England in 1984 with an organisation called Volunteering England. Today, Volunteers' Week is handled by NCVO (National Council for Voluntary Organisations), and it has grown significantly over the years.

VolunteersWeek.org  sets the theme for Volunteers Week, and the theme of National Volunteers Week 2023 is Volunteering Weaves Us Together

Volunteering is a remarkable thing to do, but it can often feel a little overwhelming, as you're not sure where to start or how many hours to volunteer. Volunteering doesn't have to take over your life for you to make a difference.

Research has shown that two to three hours per Week, or 100 hours a year, can make a significant difference.

What are the 5 benefits of volunteering? Simple Ways to Get Involved in Volunteer's Week 2023

Volunteer work is a wonderful way to make a difference, and you can work with local, national, and international organisations to make a difference. If you are new to volunteering, it can be tricky to know where to start. Below, we have included 5 simple tips to help you get started!

1.    How do I find volunteer positions?

A suitable place to start is researching local organisations in your area, such as homeless shelters, animal shelters, home construction organisations, retirement homes and libraries. Almost all local community organisations need support, especially during challenging times like the festive period.

Here are some more options to consider:

2.    Identify skills and knowledge you can offer.

Knowing what you can offer is important when volunteering. For instance, some organisations might need support with their customer service during busy periods, so if you are a great communicator and have customer service experience, your skills and experience could make a dramatic difference.

Each organisation and the skills they look for can differ, as some might need writers, drivers, cleaners, cooks, IT support staff – the list goes on. Everyone's skills can be used in the volunteering space.

3.    Entertain using a volunteer site.

Finding volunteer opportunities has never been easier, as there are many websites, such as Indeed, Linked In, and Reed, as well as volunteer organisations' websites and social media platforms to discover opportunities.

The best place to start is by visiting any charity or organisation's website that means something to you and researching their current opportunity list.

4.    Be professional

Treating your volunteer commitment like you would a paying job is best. Show up on time, deliver your obligations, and be professional. Many charity organisations rely on volunteers to get work done and make a difference, so being reliable and professional will make a difference.

5.    Is volunteering good for a CV?

Not only does volunteering experience allows you to be part of something big, but it can also:

  • Strengthen relationships
  • Strengthen social skills
  • Develop both your personal and professional life
  • Offer a sense of purpose

As a volunteer, you will learn new skills, meet new people, and face new challenges that will look great on a CV.
